Boulevard Trees: Trees planted in wide boulevards help reduce the amount of rain reaching creeks. Through their roots, Boulevard Trees help to absorb water and retain soil. These trees also provide shade and habitat for wildlife.
Disconnected Down Spouts: Disconnected downspouts are downspouts that are disconnected from the sewer system. They allow roof water to drain into lawns and gardens instead of through the sewer system and into local waterways. By allowing roof run-off to soak into the ground, the plants and soils naturally filter the pollutants in the water.
Drainage Swales: Drainage swales are a long slender ditch designed to capture rainwater runoff. Typically, water runs first through grass then into the swale. By running through the grass first, much of the water is absorbed by the vegetation.
High Density Housing: Apartment buildings, condos, and multi-dwelling living environments are good examples of high density housing. These kinds of dwellings help to consolidate people into smaller geographic areas thus preventing urban sprawl and the development of new land. High density housing is typically made up of more than one apartment or condo building in one location.
Lawn Drains/Rock Pits: These drains filter rainwater runoff through a subterranean gravel pit located beneath a manhole cover. Lawn drains help to minimize or slow down rainwater flow into local watersheds because the water seeps though the rock into the ground below.
Porous Driveways: A permeable driveway with holes which allows water to drain into the ground thus lessening the burden on storm drains and local waterways.
Sustainability: Configuring civilization and human activity so that society, its members and its economies are able to meet their needs and express their greatest potential in the present, while preserving biodiversity and natural ecosystems, planning and acting for future generations.
Sustainable Community: Communities that are planned, built, or modified to promote sustainable living. They tend to focus on environmental sustainability (including development and agriculture) and economic sustainability. Sustainable communities can focus on sustainable urban infrastructure and/or sustainable municipal infrastructure.
